The first virtual SPE Russian Petroleum Technology Conference results prove that challenges may be the catalyst for industry development

On 26–29 October 2020, SPE held the first virtual SPE Russian Petroleum Technology Conference that had been transformed into an unmissable interactive experience. This conference is significant proof that the crisis may serve as a catalyst for further development and improvement for the whole industry.

“I believe it is very important to discuss amongst professionals our best practices and technologies, also new approaches, because only people from around the globe can give you a new perspective on the things that you do on a daily basis. Using this format [online], I believe will allow us to things that were never possible to do before, like travel around the globe without even leaving your house or sacrificing your comfort.” – Dmitry Chaplygin, Salym Petroleum Development

For 4 days 600+ delegates representing 170+ companies from 14 countries united to listen to 250+ prominent speakers and discuss the most recent challenges including well construction, innovative technologies and materials, modelling, hydraulic fracturing, geomechanics, EOR solutions, digital transformation and many more.

During the Plenary Session ‘Innovations: from Idea to Best Practices’ industry experts from leading oil and gas companies including Aramco Innovations LLC, Moscow, Schlumberger, Skoltech, State Committee on Reserves, and ZYFRA shared their companies’ best practices in innovations introduction, internal selection processes and how to scale successful technologies.

“…when an oil and gas company starts working with an external partner, by default it launches the process of best practices exchange with its colleagues, thereby developing technologies and the entire market. So, the sooner companies realise that they compete not for digital technologies, but for changes in business models, the faster they will start to cooperate on the development of new technologies”. – Igor Bogachev, ZYFRA

The extensive and outstanding technical programme included an opening panel session, 24 technical sessions, 11 knowledge sharing sessions, 4 round tables, and 3 expert hours. There were 217 papers presented at the technical and knowledge sharing sessions and they were stronger than ever. Moderators noted that every work presented during the Hard-to-Recover Reserves Technical Session could grow into a separate round table. Traditionally, the technical session on ‘Well Construction – Drilling and Completions’ was one of the most attended ones, and ‘Modeling’ and ‘Digital Technologies’ Sessions were also very popular amongst attendees.

“There is always the need to stay at the peak of technology progress. For the oilfield, it has paramount importance in our days’ transformation. Only this way we develop the right solution and achieve the highest production on a dollar spent. By going online SPE allowed you to emerge into discussions that simultaneously can go more than in one place; finding the most interesting records at your will, discussions you could have missed otherwise. We are remote to stay safe, but we are still connected.” – Nikolay Smirnov – Chief Engineer, PetroGM

The round table on Decarbonisation caused a lot of positive emotions. There were 3 very interesting presentations delivered during that round table that covered all aspects of decarbonisation and caused a lively discussion. The round table gathered positive feedback not only from experienced experts in that field, but also from the young specialists who have just started to learn that topic.

The 2021 conference will take place on 12-14 October 2021 in Technopark Skolkovo, Moscow, Russia.

SPE would like to thank the technical staff and translators of Omnica!

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association whose more than 153,000 members in 153 countries are engaged in oil and gas exploration and production. SPE is a key resource for technical knowledge providing publications, events, training courses, and online resources at www.spe.org.

Income from this event will be invested back into SPE to support many other Society programs. When you attend, sponsor, or exhibit at an SPE event, you help provide even more opportunities for industry professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence. Scholarships, certification, the Distinguished Lecturer program, and SPE’s energy education program Energy4me® are just a few examples of programs supported by SPE.
