Round Table "Machine Learning and Why It Does Not Work" Results

Posted on 29 November 2018

The Round Table "Machine Learning and Why It Does Not Work" ran in the atmosphere of an open-minded exchange of opinions with regard to the capabilities of software systems based on Artificial Intelligence methods. As a result, participants agreed that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) together with Machine Learning (ML) are not the silver bullets for tackling all the technological challenges of oil and gas upstream. However, the ML tools showed their efficiency for solving a number of particular problems and further development of ML-based digital technologies supports the continuous increase of plant processes efficiency.

The participants suggested several action items:

  1. It is essential to create a centre of excellence for AI methods for oil and gas upstream targeting:
    • Development and implementation of the standardization system for data technological processes formats during exploration and production on a country-wide scale.
    • Conducting an expert review of the relevant "AI-for-oil" initiatives on the state level and level of oil & gas companies operating in Russia
    • Organizing consortia of universities and companies to solve application tasks using AI and Digital Technologies
  2. Conduct a 2-day SPE Workshop on AI and Digital Technologies for application tasks of oil and gas upstream in 2019. The conference might be considered as a successor of SPE's Digital Oilfield conference.
