Post Show Report: SPE Russia and Caspian Student Development Summit

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association for members engaging in oil and gas E&P, providing resources for technical knowledge.

SPE Mission is to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources, and related technologies for the public benefit; and to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence.

WhatsApp Image 2019-11-12 at 12.38.27.jpegOn 13-16 October 2019 Russia and Caspian Student Development Summit was held alongside SPE Annual Caspian Technology Conference and Exhibition in Baku, Azerbaijan.

It was the 6th Summit in a row from the first one in 2014 and the third one held in Baku.

This year SPE encouraged professional sections in the region and their student chapter liaisons to select best students from sponsored chapters to attend the event. 30 students from 11 universities in the region were gathered together on 13-16 October for a special event included:

  • Field trip
  • Lectures
  • Debates
  • Special expert sessions
  • HR training
  • Group case projects
  • Conference participation

Unlikely all Summits before this year it started with the Field trip. Students attended Gobustan National Park, they got acquainted with the history of Azerbaijan from ancient times to the present day, touched the rock paintings, as well as other household items of the first inhabitants of the Absheron Peninsula. The second part of the trip was organized to visit the active Mud volcanoes. Special thanks for Schlumberger and BP for trip support.

Two main days of Summit were full of career and soft skills presentations made by:

WhatsApp Image 2019-11-12 at 12.37.52.jpegStudents also had debates cases regarding operational situations they could potentially face in their careers including relationships between vendor and operator, issues of fair competition, as well as irregular working schedules. Group case projects aimed to provide audience with 2030 forecast of oil and gas industry development in Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and USA – students were divided in 5 groups – one for each country – and prepared their forecast for 2030 based on current industry trends as well as political situation.

Students also visited 1st day of Annual Caspian Technical Conference attending Opening Ceremony, Plenary Sessions and Technical sessions as well.
